4. Other Data Relevant to an Evaluation of Carcinogenicity and its Mechanisms 4.1 Radiation syndromes: Early effects of whole-body irradiation A hierarchy of health effects

چکیده
A hierarchy of health effects that appear sequentially after high doses of whole-body irradiation consists of the haematopoietic, gastrointestinal and central nervous syndromes, which are collectively referred to as the 'acute radiation syndromes' and have been extensively reviewed (Bond et al. The dose range over which these syndromes occur is shown in Table 35. The cuta-neous radiation syndrome and the chronic radiation syndrome are now considered sufficiently distinct to be included in the list of radiation syndromes. CIMETIDINE CAN MODIFY THE EFFECTS OF WHOLE BODY \'Y-IRRADIATION ON LY MPHOHEM ATOPOIETIC SYSTEM
The hematopoietic syndrome is anticipated when a dose of radiation greater than 100 cGy is received. The resulting clinical situation is life-threatening because of opportunistic infections and gradual decline in immune competency due to irradiation. Because of evidence of a possible immunomodulatory role for cimetidine, an antagonist of histamine H2 receptors, we studied the effects of thi...
متن کاملThe role and mechanisms of zinc oxide nanoparticles in the improvement of the radiosensitivity of lung cancer cells in clinically relevant megavoltage radiation energies in-vitro
Objective(s): Semiconductor zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have unique properties, such as inherent selectivity and photosensitization effects under ultraviolet (UV) radiation. ZnO NPs serve as promising anticancer agents. However, UV radiation limits their penetration into the body. In most clinical settings, it is essential to use high-energy photons in the treatment of deep-seated tumors...
متن کاملAssessment of the radioprotective effects of amifostine on human lymphocytes irradiated in vitro by gamma-rays using cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus assay
Background: A radioprotective effect of amifostine as well as its ability to modulate the level of spontaneous and gamma-irradiation-induced genetic changes on human peripheral blood lymphocytes has been investigated . Amifostine, known as a potent radical scavenger, has been introduced as the most effective radioprotector, yet it is not completely approved for the clinical use. However, furt...
متن کاملProtective Effect of Low Dose Melatonin on Radiation-Induced Damage to Rat Liver
Background: Melatonin is a free radical scavenger. It has also antioxidant effects through its stimulatory actions on antioxidant system. Objective: We conducted this study to examine the effect of different oral doses of melatonin on liver tissue. Methods: We used 42 rats—6 rats in each group. Group I served as the control group; group II rats were pretreated with only melatonin; group III w...
متن کاملTHE INTERACTION OF RADIATION AND INTERCALATING AGENTS IN NORMAL BONE MARROW CELLS AS EVALUATED BY SPLEEN COLONY ASSAY TECHNIQUE: THE EFFECTS OF BLEOMYCIN SULFATE AND ACT INOMYCIND.
The relationship between the way in which normal hemopoietic stem cells respond to irradiation alone or in the presence of bleomycin sulfate (BLM-S) and actinomycin 0 (ACT-D) was investigated. Single doses of BLM-S at 0.3 mg/kg and ACT-O at 0.10 mg/kg body weight were injected intravenously 1-6 hours prior to whole body irradiation and treatment was repeated twice more with time intervals....
